Ants

Ants cause problems primarily when they forage in buildings for food or water, or when they construct nests in buildings and gardens. When searching for food, ants can be attracted to a wide range of products, with different species preferring sweets, meats, fats or oils. They will also search indoors for water during dry periods. When desirable items are found many species will recruit fellow nest mates to help gather the food and return it to the nest. This can result in large numbers of ants appearing over a short period of time.

Of all insects that infest buildings, ants are the most common. There are many different species of ant. Each is unique in terms of nesting sites, habits, characteristics and feeding preferences.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in homes and businesses. They favour conditions similar to those that humans create, which is why effective cockroach control and cockroach management is so important. Cockroaches can contaminate food, utensils and preparation areas with droppings, cast skins, egg sacs, regurgitation marks and foul odours.

Fleas

Fleas are a common household pest especially prevalent when you or neighbouring properties have pets. Flea bites to some people and pets can just be an irritation, but for others the bites can cause an allergic reaction and result in rashes.

A common indication of a flea infestation is if your pets are excessively scratching and grooming themselves. This is caused by the discomfort caused as the adult fleas feed on the pet’s blood. A thorough examination of the pet and its fur should be conducted by the homeowner or veterinarian. People also may experience bites which leave behind itchy marks.

Mosquito

Mosquitoes are one of the most common and annoying pests around homes, particularly in summer, due to their painful bites and resulting irritating lumps. They can also carry and transmit diseases such as Ross Rive virus, Dengue fever and Australian encephalitis.

Generally, a mosquito needs water to complete its lifecycle. This can range from rot holes in trees to large lakes or salt marshes. Even subterranean water sources can support very large mosquito populations. Some mosquito eggs can dry out completely but still remain viable for considerable periods, waiting for the necessary moisture to complete the larval stage.

Silverfish

Silverfish prefer damp, dark, warm and humid places to harbor. Because of this they are often found in bathrooms, kitchens, roof voids, wall cavities, cupboards and bookshelves.

Outdoors, they may be found living under the bark of trees and garden beds, under rocks, in rotten logs and among leaf litter.

Homeowners most commonly detect silverfish when they find one on the floor or in a sink/bathtub, or they will find holes in their clothing.

Rodents

Rodents (rats & mice) are a serious issue that affect many Australian homes. Our homes are very attractive to them, as they provide them with everything they need: food, water and shelter.

Rodents do not only spread diseases and contaminate food, they also cause damage to your home. Rodents have to continually gnaw on their teeth to keep them from growing too long. They will gnaw on anything, so when you hear noises in your roof, walls or under your home they are not only nesting, but they may be gnawing on your water pipes, plaster, ducting for you heater and air-conditioning, and electrical cables and conduits. Every year homes are water damaged and fires are caused by rodent infestations.

Spiders

There are many varieties of spiders in Australia, all of which thrive in different conditions. Some spider varieties that are commonly found inside homes have adapted to the conditions indoors and can live in a less humid atmosphere and with less food consistently available, and some can even survive for months on end without food or water! Spiders that live outdoors prefer warm and damp surroundings, in which insects are their preferred source of food.

Ticks

Ticks are particularly bothersome pests because they can affect all members of your family, including children and pets. These pests are often found in properties near wooded areas and most of them require some moisture and humidity to survive. Their primary diet consists of blood and that is often drawn from animals and sometimes even humans. Pets are more susceptible to ticks and bites from them than humans are. These pests can settle on your pet’s skin and become attached. Ticks can also bite humans and cause health problems in the long run.
